What experience do you have as a psychologist?
I’ve been working as a psychologist for 25 years. A master’s degree in educational and developmental psychology led to a job in education. Progressing as a psychology supervisor, trainer and researcher through varying levels of management, I ended up in a senior role responsible for specialist teams and psychologists across 70 schools. My research into the school conditions that maximised student learning and wellbeing was awarded a PhD in educational psychology.
About 6 years ago, I transitioned to private practice for new opportunities and to realise my passion for directly helping people through therapy, supervision and assessment services. While working in a psychiatric inpatient/outpatient setting, I refreshed my skills with a clinical psychology master’s degree. Teaching and supervising in a postgraduate psychology program at a local university helps me give back to the profession. I am truly privileged to provide services for and share the journey with adults of all ages at Benesse Psychology.
What can I expect in our first session?
In our first session you can expect a warm and welcoming environment. I will introduce myself and my approach as well as discuss confidentiality and how your information will be looked after. The initial meeting is focussed on building trust, rapport, understanding your needs and gathering information. It’s a space for you to express yourself and begin your journey toward understanding and healing.
How do you look after your own wellbeing and focus?
Three areas come to mind here. 1. Doing physical activities like walking, gardening and Pilates boosts my energy. 2. Scheduling time for relaxing with friends and family, short getaways and hikes in nature keeps me balanced. 3. Having regular supervision with a clinical supervisor fosters reflection and learning and ensures I’m up to date.
